ROLE SUMMARY

If you have editorial or journalism experience, there has never been a more exciting time to join Color Of Change - an organization that sits at the intersection of social justice and media. The Senior Managing Editor will build, manage and mentor a new team within the organization that works to tell the story of our cutting-edge campaign work across our e-mail and digital petition platforms.

The Senior Managing Editor and their team will be responsible for how our members’ experience our e-mail and petition programs, including managing the email editorial calendar, developing and maintaining an email style guide, copy editing and writing, fact-checking and compliance. Your team will work to bring unity to Color Of Change’s email program, by working closely with campaigners, designers, marketing and the technology team. This role requires someone with deep editorial or journalism experience who wants to bring that knowledge to the work of running an ambitious, effective and well-resourced campaigns operation. 

Our editorial program will engage in responsibilities that range across the spectrum of issue advocacy and election organizing engaging an audience of millions. The Senior Managing Editor must have expert-level writing and communication skills, and also be adept at managing competing priorities. The right person for this role must bring a deep commitment to racial justice and a strong racial justice analysis. 

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Managing Editor’s main responsibility will be to work closely with the campaigns department to set the organization’s editorial calendar, focus the voice and tone of campaigns, and manage the (still to be hired) editorial team. 

  • Work closely with members of the Campaigns department to coordinate multiple competing priorities to find the best and most impactful presentation of messaging using the available channels. 
  • Build a team.
  • Focus the voice and tone of the email program through thoughtful feedback and guidance.
  • Oversee the development and ongoing refinement of a comprehensive style guide for the organization and ensure adherence to that style guide in all content. 
  • Collaborate with design, data & engineering and campaign departments to shape engaging digital content
  • Effectively manage workflow and deliverables on a rapid response, mid- and long-lead schedule including work outside of the traditional 9-5 workday as necessary during peak times.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate is passionate about racial justice and possesses excellent writing and digital communication skills. Qualifications include:

  • A racial justice analysis in agreement with Color Of Change’s vision and values.
  • 8-10 years of professional experience including 5+ years in a similar role at a nationally recognized journalism organization where you’ve managed an editorial calendar and guided decisions about tone and style.
  • Proactive approach and solutions-focused.
  • Excellent writer and editor
  • Proven experience hiring, managing and mentoring staff.
  • Experience building systems in inclusive ways.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize competing projects and multi-task across a broad spectrum of collaborators, based in various office locations or working remotely.
  • Dedication and ability to work flexible hours, and travel (10%) when appropriate and safe.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary is $160,000 and Color Of Change offers full-time employees a competitive benefits package.
