ABOUT COLOR OF CHANGE

Color Of Change is one of the largest Black-led racial justice organizations in the country with 7 million email and SMS subscribers. We specialize in providing our members with easy, strategic actions to take in response to racial injustices - that when added with the voices of others - create the leverage for winning real-world change for Black people.

From our work, to replace district attorneys unwilling to punish violent police officers to pushing back against Silicon Valley enablers of white supremacists,  Color Of Change has a track record of holding decision-makers - corporate and political - accountable to Black people.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

There has never been a more exciting time to be a Senior Product Manager at Color Of Change. The organization is making deep investments in technology and data. We’re scaling our technology department to optimize our work of improving the lives of Black people.

As a Senior Product Manager at Color of Change, you’ll work among a cross-functional team of data scientists and engineers to deliver user-centered products using agile methodologies and modern software development practices while building capacity for product innovation at Color of Change (COC). While partnering with COC teams to build products, you’ll coach them on modern product development practices so they’re set up for success in the long term.

Our Senior Product Manager is a subject matter expert on designing and building software and tools as products (usually APIs, data, and delivery infrastructure). You will be working with staff across COC as well as our members to ensure we’re making sure the business-critical tech solutions we develop deliver real end-user value every time. You will need to know modern technologies but also have a product mindset, ability to prioritize new features, define a product and what it is not, work with other teams to validate the service’s usefulness and drive adoption, manage delivery, manage stakeholders, and manage your team’s overall capacity.

RESPONSIBILITIES: To succeed as a Senior Product Manager, we’ve identified three areas of responsibility -- grouped into Product Vision & Development, Product Management & Strategy, and Management.

Product Vision & Product Development

  • Establish a vision and ensure all members of the COC have a shared understanding of product objectives, goals, and metrics
  • Analyze market demand and market fit, do competitive analysis, and guide build vs. buy or reuse approaches
  • Create a product strategy and roadmap and develop a communications strategy supporting product goals
  • Identify and proactively monitor and address product risks
  • Lead a cross-functional team of researchers, designers, and engineers to ensure the right product is delivered to the right audience
  • Work with the team to set and meet quality standards for any product you build
  • Use evidence (user research, analytics, and other metrics) to make product decisions, ask “why” a lot, and recognize the difference between “we can’t do that because of bureaucracy” and “we can’t do that because of the law”
  • Energize and motivate the team by recognizing successes and learning from failures

Product Management & Product Strategy

  • Keep abreast of product management best practices and bring them back into the organization
  • Speak at conferences to talk about COC’s work and share our mission
  • Contribute to COC’s culture of transparency by publishing accounts of your successes and failures
  • Continually seek out new product management tools that could improve the way we work
  • Stay on top of new technologies and pay attention to well-supported open-source product offerings that can be reused in an advocacy/ non-profit context to solve common problems (so that we help agencies not build custom tools if not needed)

Management

  • Work with teams across COC to establish in-house product ownership
  • Help the technology team and staff understand how to deliver value, rather than features, to their users
  • Help the team and staff navigate complex bureaucratic relationships to bring stakeholders together around a common product vision and strategy
  • Establish relationships with our security, operations, and IT teams that will help sustain the product in the long term
  • Help the team and staff navigate complex bureaucratic relationships to bring stakeholders together around a common product vision and strategy
  • Develop communications strategies to sustain the product during and beyond the engagement
  • Work with COC’s technology team to ensure we have the right cross-functional capacities to build and continue iterating on our product(s) beyond the first release

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be:

  • A strategic thinker who is comfortable collaboratively defining a compelling vision and designing a measurable strategy to achieve that vision
  • A decisive leader who knows how to motivate cross-functional teams to build the right thing
  • A person comfortable working in a consulting capacity as well as running a product directly
  • An empathetic coach, mentor, and advocate who helps COC staff develop the skills to have ownership of their products
  • Experience leading the development, delivery, or integration of highly complex digital products or services
  • Experience applying leading industry practices in the design, development, and delivery of digital products or services. This experience may include experimentation based frameworks, iterative development methodologies, user-centered design, planning tools, or continuous delivery methodologies
  • Experience crafting or creating product vision, strategy, or road maps
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Strong facilitation, prioritization, and influencing skills
  • Strong communication skills and can listen and share information
  • Experience with modeling business processes using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Experience prioritizing competing demands and obtaining buy-in from stakeholder(s)
  • Ability to articulate the “big picture” of the solution to delivery and client teams to understand cross-functional inter-dependencies and impact
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and explain issues from both a technical and a business functional point of view
  • Openness to contradictory opinions and flexibility in your thinking
  • A willingness to jump into projects and complex environments to make sense of ambiguous details in multiple domains
  • Demonstrated alignment with Color Of Change’s mission, and a strong commitment to racial and/or social justice
