ABOUT COLOR OF CHANGE

Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. As a national online force driven by over 7 million members, we help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us, moving decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. We activate our members to take action on crucial issues — from criminal justice to media representations to the social safety net and voter freedom — so that we can build the power necessary to transform the written and unwritten rules of society.

ROLE SUMMARY 

Nobody is currently building software tools specifically designed to help Black people and their allies win social change campaigns. We are building in-house engineering capabilities because many of the solutions we need do not currently exist as off-the-shelf software. Some of these software products will support our internal team by making their workflows easier, while others have our members and volunteers as end-users. This role works across the entire stack, but with a specialty server-side web application logic as well as front-end integration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Ownership over the product lifecycle

You’ll contribute high-quality, well-tested, maintainable code across an entire project lifecycle, using best practices for modern software development.

  • Practice and enthusiastically share engineering methodologies and tools throughout all stages of the project lifecycle
  • Influence project planning and design using usability research, analytics, and other metrics
  • Comfortable identifying, implementing, and working with a variety of design patterns
  • Participate in code review, architecture discussions, and feature prioritization
  • Take pride in ownership in all projects you touch; leave code better than you found it
  • Contribute to documentation, tests, style fixes, accessibility, performance, security, and more
  • Deliver code that’s easy to deploy, update, and monitor by ensuring that the necessary tooling is present early in the project development cycle or by introducing tooling into an existing project, as needed
  • You’re comfortable working with AWS (or have experience working with any other cloud vendor)
  • Comfortable working within, and being flexible to Agile methodologies

Collaboration

You’ll collaborate with teams, both internal and external, vendors and users.

  • Collaborate with other developers, designers, system admins, and campaigners
  • Build integrations with third-party vendors
  • Establish user feedback loops to inform future updates
  • Always be looking for opportunities to improve user conversion rates through better user experiences
  • The in-house engineering team is new to the organization, so you will need to be intentional about introducing stakeholders to development concepts

Management

You will coach other developers on best practices and provide feedback to help them grow.

  • Providing in-depth code review
  • Capable of moving from idea to system design, to product
  • Coaching junior developers
  • Can manage time and workflow of others

QUALIFICATIONS

A qualified candidate should have:

  • At least 4 - 5+ years experience as a full-stack engineer
  • Experience coaching and leading other developers
  • Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Experience developing web or mobile applications
  • Track record of using web frameworks like Django, Rails, Spring, etc.
  • Expert knowledge of multiple back-end languages (e.g. Python, Ruby)
  • You have developed apps using modern front-end frameworks like React, AngularJS
  • You have taken a leading role in delivering complex software systems all the way to production
  • You have developed distributed data processing systems against large, heterogeneous data sets
  • You have a good understanding of relational databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and web servers (e.g. gunicorn, Apache)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated alignment with Color Of Change’s mission, and a strong commitment to racial and/or social justice 
  • Understanding of key design principles, including best practices around responsive design
  • Familiarity with setting up DevOps infrastructure (CI/CD build pipelines)

The salary for the Lead Full Stack Software Engineer role is $150,000. This is a full-time exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
