The IT & Operations Team at Color Of Change oversees information technology, security, day-to-day office operations, and office culture,  and facilities management across all of Color Of Change’s offices. Our team also collaborates closely with other teams to streamline processes, introduce systems that enhance org-wide communication and collaboration, and provide project management and logistics support. Color of Change seeks a Director of IT & Operations to oversee information technology, office operations, facilities, and security (digital and physical) across all of COC’s offices.  This role oversees a national team of 7-8 staff members and is charged with ensuring that COC’s operational infrastructure is equipped to support the organization’s work as a rapid-response campaign-centric organization.

As a Director of IT & Operations, you will bring your team management, problem-solving, project management, and senior stakeholder engagement skills to bear in a strategic growth-focused organization at the forefront of Black liberation and empowerment.

This role reports to the Deputy Chief Financial & Administrative Officer.


As COC’s Director of IT & Operations, your job responsibilities will include:

IT Management

  • Overseeing IT projects in alignment with organizational goals and priorities
  • Directing the effective delivery of networks, development, and disaster recovery systems and processes
  • Working with information managers to find solutions to manage business activities
  • Researching and recommending new products
  • Identifying new market opportunities
  • Leading efforts to improve IT processes

Operational Strategy & Leadership

  • Ensure a seamless IT experience through superior network, voice, and data performance in collaboration with COC’s Managed Services Provider and other IT vendors
  • Oversee office operations and facilities across all of COC’s offices, ensuring each office enables COC staff to do their best work
  • Troubleshoot facilities-related issues in collaboration with the Operations staff and lead emerging projects or priorities (e.g., space expansion, soundproofing, relocation, etc.)
  • Develop and oversee the operational infrastructure to support COC’s political organizing and electoral work in collaboration with COC’s Campaigns, Finance, and Talent & HR teams
  • Oversee contracts of key IT & Operations Team vendors and consultants
  • Serve as a key thought partner for the Deputy CFAO on all IT and operational needs for the organization 

Team management and oversight

  • Manage a national team of 7-8 staff members across all of COC’s offices. Ensure effective performance management and feedback measures are in place and support the professional development of all team members
  • Create SMART goals and annual priorities for the IT & Operations Team base on organizational needs and priorities and develop systems and processes to monitor and measure goals -- and course-correct if necessary
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the IT & Operations team, monitoring expenses and budget-to-actual reports in collaboration with the Finance team
  • Foster a rigorous culture of accountability and team performance

Relationship Management & Stakeholder engagement

  • Build and manage relationships with stakeholders from various COC teams, including Campaigns, Marketing & Storytelling, and the President’s Office to ensure COC operational infrastructure is in line with their priorities
  • Build and manage relationships with a variety of outside vendors, ensuring not only that they can deliver on our needs but also align with our basic values

To excel in this role, you likely bring the following experience(s) to the table:

  • A minimum of 5 years leading an IT and Operations team and building operational infrastructure in a nonprofit organization (preferably a social justice and/or campaigning organization)
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading a team of multiple direct reports and managing toward a shared vision or outcome
  • Exceptional problem-solving and project management skills across a range of tasks
  • Demonstrated relationship-building and stakeholder management skills with a passion for collaborating with people and teams across the organization
  • Ability to work effectively and accurately under pressure, manage competing priorities, and remain flexible and adaptable in a rapid response environment
  • Superior communication skills and the ability to translate complex processes and topics 
  • Strong problem-solving, relationship-building, and interpersonal skills across a range of tasks and audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to think quickly and strategically in a fast-paced environment
  • A commitment to Color Of Change’s mission of advancing racial justice and contributing to a less hostile world for Black people
  • Strong technical knowledge of MAC hardware, OS, AV, and Microsoft Office applications
  • Technical knowledge of current networking protocols
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Telephony / VoIP experience a bonus
  • Knowledge of ProcessStreet,, Zendesk, and Jamf is a plus

 This is a full-time exempt position. The salary is between $105,000 and $120,000/year commensurate with experience. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
