Campaigns Data Director

Washington, DC, New York, or Oakland, CA | Data Team (Campaigns) | Full-time

About Color Of Change

Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. As a national online force driven by the actions of more than 10 million members, we help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us, moving decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. We activate our members to take action on crucial issues — from criminal justice to media representations to the social safety net and voter freedom — so that we can build the power necessary to transform the written and unwritten rules of society.

Role Summary & Background

As Color Of Change expands its staff, we’ve undertaken a major expansion of our data, analytics, and engineering capabilities to turbocharge our campaigns for change. Our electoral campaigns, grassroots lobbying, and culture change efforts are generating a flood of data, much we are currently using to inform our work -- but we’re ready to level up again.

With this role, we’re looking for a senior leader who can manage a team to provide direct support and analytics for our campaigners. You and your team would work directly with campaigners to make sure our tools (ActionKit, MobileCommons, VAN, etc) are being used to their full potential and to provide analytics that help our campaigns be more effective. This role primarily focuses on our digital advocacy campaigns, but may also help with electoral work during key election cycles.

A strong candidate will have excellent communication skills, previous management experience, a strong technical background, familiarity with CRMs and email tools used in progressive campaigning, and experience analyzing data to provide concrete recommendations.

Management and Leadership (40%)

  • This is a management role, and we care deeply about staff development, so you will spend much of your time mentoring other staff, assigning projects, pair programming, and reviewing code.
  • This role also has a change management and internal leadership aspect -- you should have experience creating data standards and processes, getting buy-in from stakeholders, and implementing across teams.

Tools Administration, Training, and Data Standards  (30%)

  • You and your team will be the main administrators and stewards for ActionKit (our emailer), along with other key tools. You should be excited about helping campaigners use these tools through training and day-to-day guidance.
  • Make sure our data is clean and consistent by implementing and monitoring data standards and tagging structures.
  • Be a thought partner for our engineering team as they create new email templates, web experiences, pipelines, and automations.

Analytics and Reporting  (30%)

  • Work with campaigners and leadership to understand what questions they need to be answered and how best to present the insights.
  • Create dashboards, memos, and other analytics products; turn analysis into clear insights and present recommendations to program leadership.
  • Help campaigners with targeting and segmentation for individual campaigns; conduct ad-hoc analysis as needed.

This is a senior data level position, and candidates should have 3-5 years of experience in a digital or data role -- ideally in a campaign, nonprofit, or media company -- as well as:

  • A strong racial justice analysis with the ability to effectively integrate this analysis in your data work.
  • Strong communication and people skills: You communicate technical info in an accessible way, and can work across teams to implement new processes.
  • Management experience: You are excited to manage staff and help them grow; you understand how to delegate and juggle multiple priorities as a team.
  • Experience as an administrator for email or CRM tools: You have been an administrator for ActionKit or a similar tool, and you learn new systems quickly.
  • Advanced SQL skills: You can easily use SQL to answer complex analytical questions, and are very comfortable training and mentoring other analysts.
  • Experience with Python, R, or another programming language: you can write code to answer common analytical questions with minimal help.
  • Experience creating dashboards and reports; experience interpreting this data to provide clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Commitment to the mission of Color of Change: to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America.

Any of the following experience is nice to have, but not required for the role:

  • Knowledge and understanding of political and advocacy campaigns, especially digital campaigning, is highly desirable but not required.
  • Experience as a digital campaigner or email outreach program manager, including in the private sector.
  • Experience with our specific toolset -- ActionKit, MobileCommons, Google Analytics, VAN, etc.
  • Experience using statistical modeling, machine learning, or other advanced methods to build models or answer questions.
  • Experience creating pipelines, automations, or other data-engineering-like tasks.
